WHAT'S UP?

It's Leap Day! In Elflock Falls, this holiday is huge, and the town is packed before lunch with locals and expatriates returning to the holler in observance of the day. What're they celebrating? Well, what came before, and what's ahead, honestly, absolution, and the spirits that live in the space between all that.

What? You mean you've never heard of the holler's guardian faries? Hm. That's weird.

Today the spirits of the holler are welcomed into the human world. Locals don animal masks to better blend in with the holler's spirits. Doorways, bridges, archways and just about anything that makes for a "passage" is decorated with boughs of maple and witch hazel flowers. Doors are left open and businesses and homes have treats set out for the fey (and any normal folks masquerading as fey).

It's all fun and games, of course, but you might want to carry some iron with you. Just in case you catch the eye of one of the local spirits...

HOW THIS WORKS

This festival happens once every four years, and even then, it’s not talked about much until the date is nearly here. It's almost as though everyone forgets about it until it’s time to remember.

Animal masks have been hung from trees all over town and campus. You may feel pulled toward a particular mask. Almost as though it was set out just for you.

There’s something strange about these masks! Each one is enchanted with a strange identity spell. You may've watched your roommate pull on that pig mask, but once it's on, you're not sure it's them anymore...

Donning a mask is not required, but strongly encouraged. Whatever magic is at work also makes those not wearing masks harder to perceive.

Down on the banks of the Greentooth River, a leap day tradition is being played out: write down something you've left unsaid, tie the message to an arrow, and shoot it across the river. If it makes it to the other bank, that means you should share what you've been keeping hidden.
